The old glass comes out and leaves with us, so you are not left standing over a pile of it. Moldings, clips and cowl fasteners are a different story. Many are single-use by design, and plastic that has baked in Houston sun for years can be brittle enough to break on removal. Not the moment we set the glass. The urethane that bonds a windshield has to cure to the point where it holds the glass in a collision and gives the passenger airbag something to push against. That safe drive-away point depends on the specific adhesive, the temperature and the humidity that day, so your installer gives you the exact figure for the product used on your vehicle before leaving.

Rain on a finished windshield is not a problem once the adhesive has cured and the bond is sealed. High-pressure washes and automatic brush tunnels are the ones to keep away from at first — the pressure works at the edges and the brushes grab at fresh moldings and at any retention tape. Leave the tape where we put it, and ask your installer how long to wait before washing.

A crack stops being repairable once it runs long, once it reaches the edge of the glass, or once it sits where the driver looks, since any repair leaves some distortion behind. Edge damage matters most, because the perimeter is where the windshield is bonded to the body and carries load. Dirt and moisture that have worked into an older break also keep a repair from bonding properly.

Yes. Side and back glass is tempered rather than laminated, so it is built to break into small blunt granules instead of long shards. The trade-off is where those granules end up: down inside the door cavity, under seat rails, in carpet and in defroster vents. We clean out what we can reach when we fit the new glass, but expect stray pieces to work out of the door for a while. Cover the opening if the car sits outside.
